Madrid's ambitious A-5 underground tunnel project has reached a major milestone, bringing the city one step closer to transforming its southwest districts. The excavation of both tunnel sections is now complete, paving the way for the next phase of construction ahead of the planned opening by the end of 2026.
The project, which represents an investment of more than €400 million, will divert approximately 80,000 vehicles per day underground, removing up to 90% of surface traffic along this key access route into the capital. Once completed, the tunnel will significantly reduce congestion, noise pollution, and emissions while improving the quality of life for local residents.
Above ground, a new 3.2-kilometre Green Corridor will be created, connecting neighborhoods that have been divided by the highway for nearly six decades. The transformation will link Lucero, Aluche, Las Águilas, Campamento, and Casa de Campo, creating new pedestrian-friendly spaces, green areas, and improved urban mobility.
With surface works scheduled to begin in September and tunnel systems currently being installed, the project marks one of Madrid's most important urban regeneration initiatives, reshaping the city while creating a cleaner, greener, and more connected future.
